Indonesia videos

As I cycled through the stunning islands which make up Indonesia on my world cycle tour I recorded videos of anything that I saw that caught my eye.  I hope that these will give you a snapshot of life within the islands that I will have been privileged enough to cycle through.

Please scroll down to watch individual videos or visit my Youtube channel where you will find all of the videos from my cycle around the world.

Wae Rebo Village – Flores (12 minutes)

Although I had seen similar villages when I lived in Africa, I had never seen anything like it in Asia.

The road to Wae Rebo – Flores (12 minutes)

Although I had seen similar villages when I lived in Africa, I had never seen anything like it in Asia.  To visit Wae Rebo would mean a round trip cycle of nearly 300 km across mountains, wading through rivers and a long hike to finish.

Kayaking Komodo Day 2 – Flores  (9 minutes)

If yesterday had been breathtaking the second day of kayaking was even more stunning as the wind had dropped and the visibility in the water was perfect.

Komodo Dragons – Flores (18 minutes)

For the next few days, Komodo National Park would be my playground. First stop on the itinerary was a days hiking in search of dragons.  Here is a video I hot to record our day. Seeing as Komodo Dragons are such a unique experience this video is much longer than the others at 18 minutes:

Indonesian Ferry – Sumbawa (6 minutes)

Indonesian ferries are the workhorses of the seas.  They pack them to the gills, leave a few hours late and sometimes sink.  That said they are a great experience.  Watch this video to get an idea of what in Indonesian ferry is like to travel on.

Final day on Sumbawa – Indonesia (11 minutes)

Sumbawa had been fantastic to ride across and was the least developed of the Indonesian islands that I had cycled.  The road had saved its toughest for my last day.  I was cycling to the ferry port of Sape and just had to negotiate the slopes of Tambora Volcano to get there.

Interior Sumbawa – Indonesia (12 minutes)

Sumbawa was the least developed Indonesian island that I had cycled across.  My 500 km cycle had taken me through fishing villages and farming communities.  This video will give you a snapshot of life in both of these.

Salt fields – Sumbawa (4 minutes)

I had not been in the salt fields since cycling out of Bangkok.  These were much bigger and impressive.  As I descended out of the mountains they filled the whole of the coastal plain in front of me.

Lakey Peak accommodation – Sumbawa (4 minutes)

Many people ask me what kind of place I stay at and so here is a video to show you what you  get for a fiver at the beach in Indonesia

Lunch stop – Sumbawa (2 minutes)

There are not many places open for food during the day so I was back to preparing my own lunch – pot noodle.  I pulled into a drinks place as I descended out of the mountains and met the friendliest owner who was more than happy to chat for a while.

Boat builders – Sumbawa (3 minutes)

Life in a fishing village has two sides – fishermen and those craftsmen who build their boats.  In this video I capture the men building a new 60 footer.

Life in a fishing village – Sumbawa (6 minutes)

Early morning is a very busy time in a fishing community as the boats dock to offload the nights catch.  Everybody in the village gets there hands dirty to help as they pack the fish ready to be sent off to market.

There’s gold in them there hills – Sumbawa (10 minutes)

As I was cycling down the road I passed a place where the noise was deafening and had no idea what they were doing so I went to investigate.  It turns out that they were processing gold.

The beach – Sumbawa – (9 minutes)

I had seen what looked like a beautiful bay on google maps and having caught the ferry from Lombok the previous day I decided to cycle the 50km or so to find the bay.
The road there would be mountainous, and a dirt track for the last 5km, but what I found was stunning.
A local farmer let me use a rain butt for water and I camped on the beach for a few days until I ran out of food.

The Run to Sumbawa – Lombok/Sumbawa – (6 minutes)

After fantastic couple of weeks on Lombok it was time to catch the ferry to the next island on my route – Sumbawa.
I am now over 4000km into this trip and quite unbelievably this Sumbawa would be the first place that I had never visited before on this cycle ride.

The wedding – Lombok – (6 minutes)

I came across the village of Obel Obel and from the noise that I could hear it was obvious that something was going on in the center of the village, and decided to park my bike and investigate.  The sight that I found was pretty spectacular – in the very center  there were 4 people, each on a separate wooden horse, being carried by the crowd and behind them were 20 or so musicians playing a heavy drum beat.

The circumcision – Lombok – (6 minutes)

Apparently, after the wedding ceremony two young boys would be circumcised in front of the crowd and I was more than welcome to come along and watch.  Now that is not an invite that you get everyday and as I had never been to a circumcision, let alone one in front of 200 people, then I was quite looking forward to going.  I can’t say the same thing about the two lads on the motorbikes who were about to lose their foreskins.
Don’t worry though as I have edited it to cut out (no pun intended…) the actual cutting bits.

The farmers – Lombok – (10 minutes)

Cycling through the villages of northern Lombok you get to appreciate how simple life can be. Most of the people are subsistence farmers who sleep in traditional wooden housing and work on the land living from hand to mouth.
Here are a few of the people I met, and sights I saw, as I cycled to catch the ferry to Sumbawa.

Climbing Rinjani – Lombok – (7 minutes)

The northern end of the Indonesian island of Lombok is dominated by an active volcano which looms 3700m over the surrounding countryside.  The order of the day was to climb the volcano and sleep overnight on the crater rim.

Camping on the beach, Lombok – (8 minutes)

The beaches of Lombok are both beautiful and often deserted which makes camping on them a must. The only issue with camping longterm is finding food (you can’t live on pot noodle forever) and having a shower now and again. Watch the video to see how I overcome these hiccups.

Bali – Indonesia (9 minutes)

Cycling north from the resort town of Senur on my way to the ferry port of Padang Bai where I would catch a boat to Lombok. On my way I passed black sand beaches and cycled through beautiful villages.
